Overview
I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Au Lac Charner Hotel, I wasn’t expecting much from the narrow entrance on Ho Tung Mau Street. But you know what? This four-star place completely surprised me in the best way possible. The lobby opens up into this surprisingly spacious area with marble floors that actually stay cool despite the humidity outside, and there’s this subtle jasmine scent that hits you right away (not overpowering like some hotels do it).
The location is honestly perfect if you want to be in the thick of things without the absolute chaos of the main tourist strips. You’re literally a three-minute walk from the Saigon River – I mean, you can see it from some of the upper floors – and Ben Thanh Market is close enough that you’ll hear the morning vendors setting up around 6 AM. District 1 can get pretty intense with motorbike traffic, but this particular stretch of Ho Tung Mau stays relatively manageable. I actually enjoyed my morning coffee on the street-facing balcony watching the organized chaos below.
What really sold me on this place was the attention to small details that matter when you’re dealing with Ho Chi Minh City’s climate and energy. The air conditioning works properly (trust me, this isn’t a given), the shower pressure is strong enough to wash off a day of exploring, and the beds are firm without being rock-hard. The staff genuinely knows the neighborhood – when I asked about finding good pho that wasn’t touristy, the front desk guy drew me a little map to this place two blocks away where locals actually eat. The breakfast spread isn’t huge, but they do fresh tropical fruit really well, and honestly, the Vietnamese coffee they serve is better than what I’ve had at much fancier hotels. One small thing – the elevators can be slow during check-in rush around 3 PM, but I started taking the stairs anyway since I needed the exercise after all that amazing street food.
Best hotels in Ho Chi Minh City range from luxurious high-rise properties in District 1 to boutique hotels in historic French Quarter and elegant accommodations overlooking the Saigon River and Ben Thanh Market.

"Excellently located cozy and French style hotel"
Excellent location very close to city center, Value for money, Spacious room free upgraded, and Comfortable bed.
What could be improved: Room charge included afternoon tea but couldn't have it as missing the time. It would be nice to have more longer time for afternoon tea.

"Wonderful"
Beautiful hotel with exceptional staff, who were polite and attentive at all times. The afternoon tea every day was a great bonus. Breakfast was great quality serving typical Vietnamese food as well as western food. Services within the hotel were good,

"Very Good"
The location is the greatest feature of this hotel, so I would say that makes it worth it to book. Also, the staff were extremely helpful with facilitating laundry and holding bags before checkout.
What could be improved: This hotel is advertised at a 4-star hotel and I disagree with that. The common areas were nice, but our room was outdated and all I can say about the breakfast and tea is that it was fine. Despite this, the room was clean and comfortable, so I would still recommend booking.

"A great choice in Saigon!"
The hotel is extremely nice and the staff super friendly. Location is very good and the roof top pool amazing. 10/1/0
What could be improved: The breakfast hasn’t been my cup of tea, but I guess that’s due to western culture

What could be improved: Bathtub not properly sealed, water sipping to the floor making it wet every time you shower

"Great choice for a cool and comfortable District 1 stay"
This hotel has a beautiful, light filled and calming lobby area with attractive art and furniture and was always a joy to return to! The dining area for breakfast just behind is also charming and the tables prettily laid, and breakfast was good with plenty of choice, eggs cooked to order etc. Our room was spacious with a comfortable bed. The shower on the balcony was a fun quirk! Nice big swimming pool and always plenty of pool towels.
We enjoyed the afternoon tea both days - a nice touch and delicious. The staff were helpful, friendly and charming.
What could be improved: Sometimes not enough loungers or chairs at the pool, not sure how this could be resolved due to roof space available.
