SOHO Residence & Hotel
I’ll be honest – when I first walked into SOHO Residence & Hotel, I wasn’t expecting much from the narrow entrance on Cô Giang Street. But you know what? Sometimes the best places in Ho Chi Minh City are hiding behind the most unassuming facades. This four-star spot completely caught me off guard in the best possible way.
The thing about this neighborhood in District 1 is that it’s got this perfect sweet spot location – you’re close enough to all the chaos of Bui Vien and the Ben Thanh Market area, but Cô Giang itself is actually pretty quiet, especially at night. I mean, you’ll still hear the occasional motorbike (this is Saigon after all), but it’s not that constant honking that keeps you up elsewhere in the city. The hotel itself feels more like a boutique residence than your typical tourist hotel, which I think is exactly what they’re going for with the name. The lobby has this clean, modern Vietnamese aesthetic – lots of natural wood and subtle lighting that doesn’t feel sterile.
What really impressed me was how the staff seemed to actually know the area. When I asked about getting to the Independence Palace, the front desk guy didn’t just point me toward a taxi – he told me about the walking route through the park and mentioned which entrance has shorter lines. Small thing, but it shows they get that travelers want real local insight. The rooms are well-designed too, honestly better than some five-star places I’ve stayed in Southeast Asia. Everything feels sturdy and well-thought-out, from the blackout curtains (crucial for those jet lag recovery days) to the rain shower that actually has decent water pressure. The air conditioning works properly – not always a given in this climate – and the beds are firm without being rock-hard. I actually slept really well, which after a 15-hour flight was exactly what I needed. There’s also this nice touch where they provide local coffee in the rooms, not just generic instant stuff. You can smell it brewing from other rooms in the morning, and it creates this cozy residential feeling.
The rooftop area deserves a mention too – it’s not huge, but it’s got good views of the city and catches a nice breeze in the evenings. I spent a couple of mornings up there with coffee just watching the city wake up. You can see the Saigon River in the distance and get a sense of how this whole district fits together. Honestly, for the price point and that 9.1 rating, it makes total sense. This isn’t trying to be the flashiest place in town, but it nails the fundamentals while giving you that authentic Saigon neighborhood experience. If you want to feel like you’re staying somewhere locals might actually recommend rather than just another tourist hotel, this is your spot.
