I’ll be honest, when I first walked into Soho Residence – District 1, I wasn’t expecting much – the entrance on Cô Giang Street is pretty understated, and you know how some places can look better in photos. But this four-star place actually surprised me in all the right ways.
The thing about staying in Ho Chi Minh City is that location really makes or breaks your experience, and this spot gets it right. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Ben Thanh Market (though honestly, I’d skip the tourist trap and head to the local markets instead), and the whole Dong Khoi area is right there when you want to do the fancy shopping thing. What I really loved though was how quiet it stays at night – Cô Giang isn’t one of those streets where motorbikes are revving until 3 AM, which trust me, matters more than you think it will.
The rooms feel more like serviced apartments than typical hotel rooms, which is perfect if you’re staying more than a couple nights. I mean, having a proper kitchenette and a washing machine actually saved me quite a bit of money, and the staff doesn’t mind if you bring back street food to eat in your room (some places get weird about that). The beds are genuinely comfortable – not just “hotel comfortable” where you wake up with a crick in your neck. And here’s something you won’t read in most reviews: the water pressure is fantastic, which anyone who’s traveled around Southeast Asia will tell you isn’t always a given. The air conditioning works properly too, no weird rattling sounds or random temperature swings that wake you up at 2 AM.
What really sets this place apart is the rooftop area – it’s not some Instagram-worthy infinity pool situation, but it’s got this chill vibe where you can actually relax with a beer and watch the controlled chaos of District 1 unfold below you. The staff up there knows how to make a decent coffee too, which sounds small but becomes important when you’re adjusting to the time difference. Speaking of staff, they’re helpful without being pushy, and a couple of them actually gave me better restaurant recommendations than anything I found online. There’s this little pho place about two blocks away that they suggested – still think about that broth sometimes.
The whole property feels well-maintained without being sterile, if that makes sense. Like, the lobby has personality, the hallways don’t smell like cleaning chemicals mixed with mystery odors, and everything just works the way it should. Check-in was smooth, they stored my luggage without any drama when I arrived early, and honestly, the 9.2 rating makes total sense once you’ve stayed there. It’s one of those places where you’re not constantly thinking about what’s wrong or what’s missing – you just settle in and focus on exploring the city, which is exactly what you want from a good hotel.
Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City booking should be done early, especially during peak tourist season when the city hosts internationally celebrated cultural events and festivals in District 1 and other iconic locations.
You need to let the property know what time you'll be arriving in advance.
