I honestly wasn’t expecting much from a three-star apartment-style place tucked away in District 10, but this spot actually surprised me in the best way. I mean, District 10 isn’t exactly where most tourists end up – it’s more where real Ho Chi Minh City life happens, away from the tourist crowds of District 1.

The apartment setup is what makes this place work so well, especially if you’re staying more than a couple nights. You get a proper kitchen (and I actually used it, which says something), decent space to spread out your stuff, and honestly, it feels more like borrowing a friend’s place than staying in a hotel. The Orchid 1 building itself is pretty typical for this area – nothing fancy on the outside, but the units are clean and functional. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night, which is rare in Ho Chi Minh City. Sure, you’ll still hear the occasional motorbike, but compared to the chaos of the backpacker areas, it’s practically serene.

The neighborhood is genuinely local – there’s a wet market about a five-minute walk away where you can grab fresh fruit for practically nothing, and some of the best street food I had during my entire trip was right around the corner. I’m talking about the kind of places where you’re the only foreigner and the bánh mì costs less than a dollar. Getting to the main tourist areas does require a bit of planning – you’re looking at maybe 15-20 minutes by taxi to District 1, depending on traffic (and there’s always traffic). The building’s entrance can be a little tricky to find the first time, especially at night, so I’d recommend arriving during daylight if possible. Also, don’t expect a fancy lobby or concierge service – this is very much a residential building that happens to rent out some units. But honestly, that’s part of what I liked about it. You get to see how regular people actually live in the city, not just the polished version hotels usually present.
