La Serena – Phu My Hung
I’ll be honest – I almost walked past La Serena – Phu My Hung the first time I was looking for it because it sits tucked away in the residential maze of Hung Phuoc 4, but that turned out to be exactly what made my stay so unexpectedly pleasant. This three-star place is buried deep in the Phu My Hung development in District 7, which means you’re staying in what feels like a planned suburb rather than the chaotic heart of Ho Chi Minh City. The whole area has this weird American-suburb-meets-Vietnam vibe that takes some getting used to, but honestly, after a few days of motorbike exhaust and street food chaos in District 1, the quiet tree-lined streets here felt like a small miracle.
What struck me most was how the staff actually seemed to care – and I don’t mean in that overly rehearsed hotel way. The front desk guy remembered I was traveling alone and would check in about my day when I’d come back from exploring. The rooms are clean and straightforward, nothing fancy but everything works (which, you know, isn’t always a given). The AC is strong enough to actually cool the room, not just move hot air around, and the water pressure in the shower was surprisingly decent. I mean, the furniture is pretty basic and the TV only had a few English channels, but the bed was comfortable and the whole place felt well-maintained rather than just scraping by.
The location is sort of a double-edged thing though. On one hand, you’re about 20 minutes by taxi from the main tourist areas like Ben Thanh Market or the War Museum, and grab rides can add up if you’re constantly heading into District 1. But being in Phu My Hung means you’re close to some genuinely good local spots that most tourists never see – there’s this incredible bánh mì place about a five-minute walk away that locals line up for, and the Crescent Mall is close enough for when you need familiar food or want to escape the heat for a few hours. Plus, if you’re doing any business in the south of the city or planning day trips to places like the Cu Chi Tunnels, you’re actually better positioned here than staying downtown. The neighborhood gets pretty quiet after 10 PM, which was perfect for me but might feel a bit dead if you’re looking for nightlife. Parking seemed easy enough if you’re renting a motorbike, and I never felt unsafe walking around, even late at night. It’s definitely not a luxury experience, but for what you pay, La Serena delivers exactly what it promises without any unpleasant surprises.
