I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Hotel Indigo Saigon the City by IHG, I wasn’t expecting much from another international chain property. But this five-star spot on Ly Tu Trong Street completely changed my mind about what a hotel can be in District 1. The lobby hits you with this incredible blend of colonial French architecture and contemporary Vietnamese design – think rich wood panels mixed with local artwork that actually tells the story of old Saigon rather than just looking pretty on the walls.

What really got me was how they’ve managed to create this calm sanctuary literally steps from the chaos of Nguyen Hue Walking Street, yet you’re close enough to smell the pho from the street vendors on Dong Khoi. The rooms have these massive windows that frame the city perfectly, and honestly, watching Ho Chi Minh City wake up from the upper floors is something else entirely. The air conditioning is properly powerful (crucial during those sweltering April afternoons), and the beds are exactly what you need after spending hours wandering through Ben Thanh Market or getting lost in the narrow alleys of the old quarter. I mean, the bathroom amenities alone – locally inspired scents that somehow capture the essence of jasmine and Vietnamese coffee – show they’re paying attention to details that matter.

The rooftop bar deserves its own paragraph because the view over the Saigon River at sunset is genuinely breathtaking, especially when the city lights start reflecting off the water. You know what impressed me most though? The staff actually knows the neighborhood – not just the tourist spots everyone mentions, but the little things like which entrance to the Opera House has shorter lines, or where to find the best banh mi that’s not overrun with tourists.
