Garden Plaza Saigon – Formerly PARKROYAL Saigon
I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Garden Plaza Saigon – Formerly PARKROYAL Saigon, I wasn’t expecting much from a four-star place on Nguyen Van Troi Street. But you know what? This hotel actually surprised me in the best way possible. The lobby has this clean, modern vibe that immediately tells you the management knows what they’re doing, and the staff genuinely seem happy to see you (which, let’s face it, isn’t always the case in busy Ho Chi Minh City). The location is honestly perfect if you want to avoid the chaos of District 1 but still be close enough to everything that matters – you’re literally five minutes from the airport by taxi, which saved my life on an early morning flight, and getting to Ben Thanh Market or the main tourist areas takes maybe 15-20 minutes depending on traffic.
The rooms themselves feel spacious, especially by Vietnamese hotel standards, and I mean actually spacious, not just “we put a mirror on the wall to make it look bigger” spacious. The beds are comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up with that hotel mattress backache, the air conditioning works like a dream (crucial in this humidity), and the bathrooms have decent water pressure – small things that make a huge difference when you’re dealing with the heat and energy of this city. What really impressed me was how quiet it stays at night, even though you’re on a fairly busy street. The windows must be well-insulated because I barely heard the motorbike symphony that usually keeps me up in other parts of the city. The breakfast spread is solid too – they’ve got both Western options and local dishes, so you can ease into Vietnamese cuisine or stick with what you know while your stomach adjusts to the spice levels.
Here’s what I really appreciated though – the neighborhood around the hotel feels authentically Vietnamese without being overwhelming for first-time visitors. There’s this great little cafe about two blocks away where locals actually hang out (not just tourists), and you can walk to some decent street food spots without having to navigate the madness of the old quarter. The hotel staff gave me genuinely helpful directions, not just the standard “turn left and walk” but actual landmarks to look for, which tells me they know their area and care about your experience. Is it the fanciest place in the city? No, but honestly, that works in its favor – you get solid comfort and service without the pretentious attitude or inflated prices of some of the luxury places downtown. For the money, especially considering that 8.4 rating reflects real guest experiences, this is the kind of place I’d book again without hesitation.
