White Lion Hotel
You know what struck me first about the White Lion Hotel? It’s got this wonderfully unpretentious charm that’s become pretty rare these days. I mean, it’s a solid three-star property, but there’s something genuinely welcoming about the place that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled onto a local secret rather than just another chain hotel.
The lobby has this lived-in quality – not shabby, mind you, but comfortable in the way your favorite coffee shop feels comfortable. The staff actually seem to remember guests’ names, which honestly surprised me on my second visit. I watched the front desk clerk chat with a couple about local walking routes for a good ten minutes, giving them the kind of insider tips you usually have to pry out of people. The rooms are what you’d expect – clean, functional, with that slightly old-fashioned English hotel feel. The beds are surprisingly good actually, and the bathrooms, while not huge, have proper water pressure (thank goodness). What I really appreciated was the attention to small details – decent lighting for reading, enough outlets near the bed, and windows that actually open if you want fresh air instead of just recycled AC.
The location works well if you’re looking to explore beyond the typical tourist trail. It’s tucked away enough that you’re not dealing with constant street noise, but close enough to everything that matters. I found myself walking to most places I wanted to go, and there’s something to be said for ending your day somewhere that feels more like a neighborhood spot than a tourist hub. The breakfast is honest English fare – nothing fancy, but they do it properly, and the coffee’s actually decent. I’ve stayed at flashier places that couldn’t manage that. Look, it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury, but sometimes you just want a place that does the basics really well without any fuss or pretense. The White Lion manages that balance perfectly.
