I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to The Sun Avenue Sky & River View, I wasn’t expecting much from the outside. It’s this sleek tower sitting right on Mai Chí Thọ Boulevard, and you know how some of these newer developments in Ho Chi Minh City can feel a bit sterile. But man, was I wrong about this place.
The moment you step into the lobby, there’s this immediate sense that someone actually thought about what travelers want. The staff genuinely seemed happy to see me (not that forced hotel smile you get sometimes), and check-in was refreshingly quick – maybe five minutes tops. What really got me though was when I made it up to my room on the 18th floor. The view they promise in the name? They absolutely deliver on it. I mean, you’re looking out over the Saigon River on one side, and the city sprawling endlessly on the other. I actually found myself just standing there for a good ten minutes taking it all in.
This is definitely a solid four-star property, and it shows in ways that matter. The rooms are spacious by Vietnamese standards – I could actually open my suitcase without rearranging the furniture. The bed was properly comfortable (none of that rock-hard mattress situation you sometimes get), and honestly, the shower had better water pressure than my apartment back home. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stayed at night, even though you’re right on a major boulevard. The soundproofing is legit. The location works really well if you’re planning to explore both District 2 and the city center – you’re close enough to the Saigon River tunnel that getting downtown doesn’t take forever, but you’re also right in the heart of Thủ Thiêm with all its newer restaurants and cafes. There’s actually this great little coffee spot called Bosgaurus just a five-minute walk away that the concierge recommended, and it became my morning ritual. The hotel’s restaurant is decent for breakfast, though I’d skip dinner there and venture out – you’re in Vietnam, after all, and there’s incredible street food literally everywhere around you. One thing that surprised me was the rooftop pool area. It’s not huge, but it’s perfectly positioned to catch the sunset over the river, and there were never too many people up there when I visited in March. Just don’t expect it to be heated – refreshing during the day, pretty chilly in the evening.
Ho Chi Minh City’s hotels showcase the perfect blend of traditional Vietnamese hospitality and modern luxury, with many featuring rooftop pools and authentic spa experiences overlooking the vibrant Saigon skyline.
