Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Somerset Ho Chi Minh City, I wasn’t expecting much from another serviced apartment complex. But this five-star place actually surprised me in the best way possible. The lobby has this understated elegance that doesn’t scream “look at me” like some of the flashier hotels around District 1, and you know what? That worked perfectly for someone like me who gets tired of all the marble and gold everywhere else in the city.
What really sold me on this place was how it manages to feel like you’re living in Ho Chi Minh City rather than just visiting it. The apartments – and I mean proper apartments with full kitchens – give you space to actually breathe, which is saying something in a city where most hotel rooms feel like expensive closets. I ended up cooking a few meals with ingredients from Ben Thanh Market (just a reasonable walk away, by the way), and having that kitchen made such a difference after weeks of street food and restaurant meals. The staff seems to get that most guests are staying longer than your typical hotel visit, so they’re not hovering or trying to upsell you every five minutes. Actually, the housekeeping team was surprisingly flexible about timing – I’m not a morning person, and they worked around my schedule without making it feel like I was asking for the moon.
The location works really well if you want to be central but not right in the chaos of Dong Khoi Street. You’re close enough to walk to all the main attractions when you feel like dealing with the crowds, but far enough away that you can actually get some sleep at night. The rooftop pool area became my go-to spot in the evenings – nothing fancy, but the views over the city skyline are genuinely impressive, especially when the sun’s going down and all those motorbikes start turning their lights on. One thing I appreciated was how quiet the building stays despite being in the middle of everything. The soundproofing is actually decent, which isn’t something you can take for granted in this city. I mean, you’ll still hear the occasional horn or construction (it’s Vietnam, after all), but it’s not the constant noise assault you get at some places. The fitness center is small but has everything you need, and I rarely had to wait for equipment. Just don’t expect it to be huge – this isn’t a resort, it’s more like a really well-run residential building that happens to rent to travelers.
