Oakwood Hotel & Apartments Saigon
I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Oakwood Hotel & Apartments Saigon, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like another serviced apartment building in District 1. But you know what? This place actually surprised me in the best way possible. The lobby has this understated elegance that doesn’t scream “look at me” like some of the flashier hotels around town, and the staff genuinely seemed happy to see guests rather than just going through the motions.
What really sets this four-star property apart is how it straddles that sweet spot between hotel comfort and apartment practicality. The suites – and I mean proper suites, not those tiny rooms some places try to pass off – come with actual kitchenettes that you’d want to use. I’m talking full-sized fridges, decent cookware, and counter space where you can actually spread out your street food hauls from Ben Thanh Market (which, by the way, is close enough that you’ll hear the early morning setup if you’re a light sleeper). The washing machines in each unit are a godsend if you’re staying more than a few days – honestly, after a week of Vietnam’s humidity, being able to do laundry without hunting down a service was pure luxury.
The location puts you right in the thick of Saigon’s energy without the chaos of being directly on one of the main drags. You’re close enough to walk to the Opera House and all those rooftop bars that tourists love, but tucked away on a side street where taxis can actually find you without circling the block three times. The pool area on the roof is nothing spectacular – I mean, it’s clean and functional – but the real draw is sitting up there in the evening with a beer from the nearby Circle K, watching the organized chaos of motorbikes flowing through the streets below. The gym is better than most hotel fitness centers, though it gets pretty warm in the afternoons since the air conditioning seems to struggle a bit. Check-in was smooth, and they actually helped me figure out the best way to get to the Cu Chi Tunnels without trying to sell me an overpriced tour package. That kind of genuine helpfulness is rarer than you’d think in this city.
