You know what really caught me off guard about Mai Home – Apartment & Homestay? It’s one of those places that completely defies its modest three-star rating – I mean, whoever’s doing the rating system clearly hasn’t been paying attention because this place punches way above its weight class.
I’ll be honest, when I first booked it I wasn’t expecting much beyond a basic place to crash. But the moment I walked in, there was this immediate sense that someone actually cares about this place. The owner – Mai, obviously – has this incredible knack for making spaces feel like, well, home. And I don’t mean that in the cheesy marketing way, I mean you actually want to kick off your shoes and settle in for longer than you planned. The apartments have this lived-in comfort that’s hard to fake, with little touches like proper coffee makers (not those terrible single-serve things), decent Wi-Fi that doesn’t cut out every five minutes, and – this might sound weird but hear me out – really good shower pressure. You’d be amazed how many places get that wrong.
What really sets Mai Home apart though is the homestay vibe they’ve managed to create without being intrusive about it. Mai herself is this wonderful resource for local recommendations, but she’s not hovering around trying to upsell you on tours or whatever. She’ll casually mention the best pho spot that’s actually where locals eat, or which market has the freshest produce, then leaves you to figure it out. The other guests tend to be a mix of longer-term travelers and people who’ve clearly been coming back for years – always a good sign, honestly. I ended up having some of my best conversations just hanging out in the common areas, which have this natural flow that encourages interaction without forcing it. There’s something about the way the spaces are set up that makes you want to linger over morning coffee or share a beer in the evening. And practically speaking, the location gives you that perfect balance of being accessible to everything you want to see while still feeling like you’re experiencing something authentic rather than tourist-central. The whole experience just works in a way that makes you understand why this place has such loyal guests – it’s got that rare combination of genuine warmth and solid practical amenities that keeps people coming back.
