First Impressions
Walking up to Homestay68 on Trần Đình Xu street, you’ll notice it’s not trying to be something it isn’t — and honestly, that’s exactly what makes it work. This three-star spot sits right in the heart of District 1, tucked into a narrow street that somehow manages to feel both central and surprisingly quiet. The building itself is typical Vietnamese style — narrow and tall — but there’s something welcoming about the way they’ve set up the entrance that immediately puts you at ease.
Location That Actually Matters
Here’s what I love about the location — you’re literally a five-minute walk from Ben Thanh Market, but you’re not dealing with the chaos of being right on top of it. Trần Đình Xu runs parallel to some of the busier tourist streets, which means you get all the access without the constant noise of motorbikes and street vendors right outside your window. I mean, you’ll still hear Ho Chi Minh City being Ho Chi Minh City, but it’s manageable. The street food scene around here is incredible too — there’s this bánh mì cart that sets up just around the corner in the mornings that locals actually go to, not just tourists.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was compact but thoughtfully laid out — you know how some budget places just cram a bed into a box and call it a day? Not here. There’s actually space to open your suitcase without having to put it on the bed, and the air conditioning works properly (trust me, this matters more than you think in Saigon’s heat). The bathroom is small but clean, with decent water pressure, and they’ve managed to fit in a little desk area if you need to catch up on emails or plan your next day.
What Sets It Apart
The staff here genuinely seem to care about helping you figure out the city — not in that scripted hotel way, but more like they’re actually proud of where they live. They’ll draw you little maps on scraps of paper and tell you which streets to avoid during rush hour. The common area downstairs has this relaxed vibe where you’ll often find other travelers comparing notes about what they’ve discovered. There’s no restaurant on-site, but honestly, with the food scene right outside your door, you don’t need one.
Why Guests Love It
What really comes through in talking to other guests is how this place just gets the basics right without any fuss. You’re not paying for amenities you won’t use, but everything you actually need works well. The couples who stay here seem particularly happy — I think it’s because the neighborhood has this nice mix of energy during the day and relative calm at night. Plus, there’s something romantic about those narrow streets lined with French colonial buildings, especially in the early evening when the light hits just right. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re staying in the real Ho Chi Minh City, not some sanitized tourist version of it.
