I’ll be honest, when I first heard the name HOD Apartment Da Kao, I wasn’t sure what to expect – it sounds more like a local apartment building than a proper hotel. But you know what? That’s actually part of its charm. This three-star place sits right in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1, and I mean really in the thick of things. Da Kao is one of those neighborhoods that feels authentically Vietnamese while still being walkable for tourists who don’t know their way around yet.
The building itself is pretty typical for this part of the city – narrow frontage, several floors up, and you’ll probably walk past it twice before you spot the small sign. But once you’re inside, it’s actually quite spacious. The apartments (because that’s really what they are) have this lived-in feel that’s way more comfortable than your standard hotel room. I’m talking actual kitchenettes with full-size fridges, sitting areas that don’t feel cramped, and honestly, way more closet space than you’d expect. The air conditioning works well too, which – trust me – you’ll appreciate when you’re dealing with Saigon’s humidity. I stayed during the rainy season and never had issues with dampness or that musty smell you sometimes get in older buildings here.
What really sold me on this place was the location specifics that most hotels don’t tell you about. You’re literally a five-minute walk from the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office, but more importantly, you’re close to some incredible local food spots that tourists usually miss. There’s this bánh mì place on the corner that opens at 6 AM, and the sound of motorbikes starting up becomes oddly comforting after the first night. The street can get busy during rush hour – I mean, it’s District 1, so that’s expected – but it quiets down nicely in the evenings. Parking isn’t really a thing if you’re thinking of renting a car, but honestly, you won’t need one from this spot anyway. The staff speaks decent English and actually seems to care about helping you figure out the city, which isn’t always a given at this price point. They’ve got that perfect rating for a reason – it’s not fancy, but everything just works the way it should.
