I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Empire City Thủ Thiêm District 2, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this part of town. District 2 has been changing so rapidly over the past few years, and this spot on Mai Chí Thọ street is right in the thick of that transformation. But you know what? This four-star place really surprised me in the best way possible.
The thing about staying here is that you’re actually getting the best of both worlds – you’re close enough to central Ho Chi Minh City that a quick Grab ride gets you to District 1 in about fifteen minutes (assuming traffic cooperates, which, let’s be real, is always a gamble), but you’re also in this newer, more spacious part of the city that doesn’t feel quite so overwhelming. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s still Saigon, so there’s plenty of energy and noise, but it’s different here – more spread out, wider streets, actual sidewalks you can walk on without dodging motorbikes every three seconds.
What really won me over was how the hotel staff seemed to genuinely get that most of their guests are trying to figure out this area. The front desk guy (I think his name was Minh?) actually sketched out a little map showing me which direction to walk for the best street food – and he was right, there’s this incredible bún bò Huế spot about ten minutes away that I never would have found otherwise. The rooms themselves are solid, nothing too fancy but everything works properly, which honestly is half the battle in this humidity. The AC keeps up, the shower has decent pressure, and the beds are firm enough that you won’t wake up feeling like you’ve been wrestling with a marshmallow all night. I actually appreciated that the windows are pretty soundproof because Mai Chí Thọ can get busy with traffic, especially during rush hour.
Here’s something I didn’t expect – the neighborhood comes alive in this really interesting way once the sun goes down. There are these little coffee shops and late-night eateries that seem to pop up out of nowhere, and you’ll find yourself wandering around discovering stuff that definitely isn’t in any guidebook yet. The hotel’s location puts you right in walking distance of some seriously good local spots, but it’s also close enough to the fancier developments that you can easily hop over to a rooftop bar or proper restaurant when you want something a bit more upscale. Honestly, if you’re the type of traveler who wants to experience the real Saigon but also needs a comfortable, reliable place to crash at the end of the day, this works really well. Just don’t expect it to be in the absolute center of all the tourist action – but that might actually be exactly what you’re looking for.
