I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to California Saigon Hotel & Rooftop Pool, I wasn’t expecting much from the name alone. But you know what? Sometimes the most straightforward names hide the best surprises, and this four-star spot really delivered on the one thing that matters most in Vietnam’s sweltering heat: that rooftop pool.

The thing about staying in Saigon is that you’re constantly battling the humidity and the incredible energy of the streets below. What I loved about this place was how it managed to give you both – you’re right in the thick of things when you want to be, but then you can escape to what feels like your own private oasis on the roof. The pool isn’t huge, mind you, but it’s perfectly sized and the views over the city skyline are genuinely spectacular, especially around sunset when the whole city starts to glow. I actually found myself spending way more time up there than I planned, just watching the organized chaos of motorbikes and street vendors below while floating in perfectly cool water.

The rooms themselves are solid – nothing that’ll blow your mind, but everything works properly, which honestly isn’t always a given in this price range. The air conditioning is strong (crucial), the beds are comfortable enough, and the bathrooms are clean with decent water pressure. What I really appreciated were the little touches that showed someone was actually thinking about guest experience – like having proper blackout curtains for afternoon naps and enough outlets near the bed for all your devices. The staff at the front desk were particularly helpful with restaurant recommendations, and I mean actually good suggestions, not just the tourist traps. They pointed me toward this incredible pho place about three blocks away that I never would have found otherwise. The Wi-Fi worked reliably throughout the building, which isn’t always guaranteed, and the breakfast – while not elaborate – had enough variety to fuel you for a day of exploring. I’d definitely stay here again, especially for that rooftop sanctuary.
