Amory Aparthotel Nguyen Trai
You know what really surprised me about Amory Aparthotel Nguyen Trai? It’s tucked away on this narrow side street in District 1, but somehow it feels like a quiet retreat even though you’re literally in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. I mean, step outside and you’re hit with the usual motorbike symphony and street food aromas, but inside – honestly, it’s this calm little bubble that I wasn’t expecting from a three-star place.
The aparthotel thing actually works really well here. My room had this compact kitchenette that was perfect for making morning coffee (Vietnamese coffee is incredible, but sometimes you just want your caffeine fix without negotiating in broken Vietnamese at 7 AM). The space felt more like a small apartment than a hotel room, which I appreciated after weeks of cramped accommodations elsewhere in Southeast Asia. The staff genuinely seemed to care – not in that over-the-top way that feels forced, but more like they actually wanted to help. When I was trying to figure out how to get to the Cu Chi Tunnels, the front desk guy spent a good ten minutes drawing me a map and explaining which xe om drivers to avoid.
Location-wise, you’re maybe a fifteen-minute walk from Ben Thanh Market, but here’s the thing – you’re far enough away that you don’t get the constant tourist hustle. The little alley it’s on has this great banh mi cart that shows up around 4 PM (the owner makes these incredible grilled pork ones), and there’s a proper local coffee shop two doors down where nobody speaks English but they make the best ca phe sua da I had in the city. Honestly, I ended up extending my stay an extra two nights just because I got comfortable with the rhythm of the neighborhood. The only minor complaint I’d have is that the elevator is pretty slow – not a big deal unless you’re on the higher floors with heavy luggage, but worth mentioning. The 8.6 rating makes sense to me; it’s not fancy, but it’s solid and genuine in a way that a lot of hotels in tourist areas just aren’t.
To book a hotel in Ho Chi Minh City during the dry season from December to April, travelers need early planning as this energetic city draws visitors eager to explore its rich history and world-famous street food scene.
